The winemaking tradition of the Pérez Foncea family dates back to the late 19th century but it was only in the latter part of the 20th century (1984) that they started to sell bottled wine. Until then, their winemaking efforts had focused on making and selling wine in bulk to wineries. In 1984, Luis Pérez Foncea decided to transform the distillery in Fuenmayor into a modern, functional bodega to make, age and bottle Rioja wine. He employed his know-how in state-of-the-art technology to make wines that expressed their full personality. The firm was converted into a limited company in 1996 and renamed Bodegas Vallemayor.
